Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)

UGS uses an ultrasound probe to locate the vein that is to be treated. A needle is inserted into the vein and placement into the correct vein is confirmed on the ultrasound display before the vein is injected.

The solution injected is usually a foamed sclerosant agent.

UGS is a brief, walk-in walk-out procedure requiring only several injections. There is no need for any type of anaesthetic to be used.

Some people will require several sessions of UGS depending on the size and number of veins being treated as there is a safe limit of sclerosant solution that can be used in any one session.

The result of treatment is checked with an ultrasound scan 1-2 weeks later.
