Dermal Fillers

Fillers and ageing

As we age, the lines and wrinkles on our face can linger a little longer and become a little deeper.

The curves and contours of the face can also change as volume is lost. Areas that are particularly prone to volume loss include the cheeks, lips, brows, temples and jawline.

To help restore volume, dermal fillers are injectable gels that can be placed below the skin’s surface. They can help provide more youthful contours and smoother skin.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels that restore volume to areas of the face. Many contain a substance that replicates the actions of a naturally occurring sugar molecule, attracting and holding water to assist with skin hydration. The products can be placed below the skin’s surface to provide more youthful contours and smoother skin.

Dermal Fillers are a prescription only medication, and can only be administered under the supervision of a doctor.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers are smooth injectable gels made from synthesised hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the skin. They give your skin volume and hydration, diminishing the depth of wrinkles and creating a more refreshed facial appearance.

How long does the procedure take and when will I see results?

Dermal fillers produce instant results – a typical first procedure takes about 30 minutes and includes a comprehensive consultation with your clinician.

Is there any downtime?

There is very little downtime with dermal filler injections. You should be able to return to your daily activities right away.

Some dermal fillers also contain an anaesthetic which can reduce discomfort during injections.

How long will the results last?

The effects of dermal fillers can last anywhere between 9-24 months, depending on what product has been used.

Are there any side-effects

Dermal fillers have been used for many years and are generally well tolerated. While you may experience no side effects at all, as with all medications, side effects can occur.

In the vast majority of cases, these effects are temporary and should resolve within a week. If you have any concerns about side effects, talk to your clinician.

Your clinician will recommend you schedule a follow-up appointment to assess your progress 2-4 weeks after your treatment and again at 6 months.

Can dermal filler treatment be combined with other products and procedures?

Dermal Fillers can be combined with other cosmetic treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections, which relax facial muscles, or with other treatments that restore skin tone, to rejuvenate the whole face.

Where can Dermal Fillers be used?

As we age, the lips and surrounding area are particularly vulnerable to volume loss. The corners of the mouth can begin to droop, which can create a sad or angry look.

Additionally, the v-shaped area of the upper lip, known as the cupid’s bow, begins to flatten out. Vertical lip lines may also appear and cause lipstick to bleed.

For youthful lips, stronger definition of the lip border or the subtle addition of volume can enhance these areas.
